10 Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Maid

A short, respectful discussion before hiring can prevent many avoidable misunderstandings. Use these questions to understand whether the work arrangement is suitable for both the household and the worker.

Questions about the work

  1. Which household tasks are you comfortable and experienced in doing?
  2. Are there any tasks you do not take on or need specific equipment for?
  3. What working hours and days are you available for?
  4. What experience do you have with the type of household support we need?
  5. Can you provide references from previous work, where available?

Questions about the arrangement

  1. What salary or payment arrangement are you expecting for these duties and hours?
  2. What weekly off, leave and break arrangements do you require?
  3. How should extra tasks or changes to the regular schedule be discussed?
  4. What identity or reference checks have been completed, and what can be verified?
  5. What notice period or process should apply if either side wants to end the arrangement?

Explain your household rules too

An interview should be a two-way discussion. Explain access to the home, privacy expectations, use of household equipment, visitor rules, emergency contacts and any relevant safety instructions. Give the other person time to ask questions.

Do not skip the written terms: Record the final duties, hours, salary, weekly off, leave and any accommodation or food arrangement. Confirm that both sides understand the agreement.

Choose clarity over assumptions

A friendly conversation is useful, but it does not replace clear terms or appropriate verification. Take time to check the details that matter to your household before confirming.
