Simple Ways to Keep Your Home-Cleaning Routine Safer

A good cleaning routine should keep the home organised without creating avoidable risks. Clear instructions and sensible storage practices help everyone handle household products and equipment more carefully.

Read product labels before use

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for dilution, surface compatibility, contact time and protective equipment. Keep products in their original labelled containers whenever possible, and do not use a product for a purpose that is not listed on its label.

Never mix cleaning chemicals

Do not mix bleach with ammonia, acids or other cleaning products. Mixing chemicals can release dangerous gases or cause harmful reactions. Use one product at a time and follow label directions for rinsing before using another product on the same surface.

Store supplies safely

  • Keep cleaning products in a designated storage area, away from food and drink.
  • Keep chemicals in their original containers with labels intact.
  • Store products out of reach of children and pets.
  • Do not transfer chemicals into water bottles or food containers.
  • Keep tools such as blades and sharp equipment stored securely.

Ventilate rooms and use equipment carefully

Open windows or use appropriate ventilation when the product label recommends it. Use gloves or other protective equipment when instructed. Keep electrical appliances away from wet areas and unplug equipment before cleaning it, where the manufacturer recommends this.

Agree on household safety instructions

Show where supplies are stored, identify surfaces that need special care and explain any products that should not be used in your home. Keep emergency contact details accessible and make sure everyone knows how to report a spill or accidental exposure.

Important: If someone has been exposed to a hazardous product, follow the product label and seek appropriate local medical or emergency advice. Do not rely on improvised remedies.
